Gingerbread Parade

Freak Show by Kiki.
Last year was exceptional in many ways. But as Xmas is coming, we want to remind you of our wonderful adventures with ginger bread dough. The dough, which in our hands and under the guidance of gingerbread gods transformed into a freak circus massacre with ladies cut in half, world's strongest men & to the heart breaking tragedy about the devastating power of fire, which the gingerbread house number 13 had experienced.

So when you look at the gingerbread dough - what does it tell you? What do you see? Where do the lumps and the smooth surface after a little touch of rolling pin take your thoughts? To the wilderness of nature or highways of an asphalt jungle, to the haze of pink clouds or deep depths of an ocean? Is it 3 legged deer peeking from behind the tree, disfigured hedgehog or a cat with no ears?

Let your hands, rolling pins and cookie cutters lead your way to the gingerbread parade, the kind of one has never experienced before! All your creatures are welcome, so please, do post a photo to our Gingerbread Parade event wall and give a crazy Xmas greeting to us all!

Please, do spread the word!
♥ Kiki & Bettie

The Dance of Death

View from the gallery
Suvi Aarnio, my other half is having an exhibition at gallery Å, in Turku. It's open until the end of year 2011, so if you've a chance, please stop by!
Joka hetkessä asuu ikuisuus / The eternity lives in every moment, 2011

About the exhibition: "Joie de vivre and fear of death intertwine with folkore and popculture, leading us to the macabre shortcuts of subconscious, to the thin borderline of dreaming and being awake. Works created with embroidery and video present chaotic ideas of afterlife, the crushing power of nightmares, carnal death having a feast and randomness, we expose ourselves to every single moment."

What a feeling!

Dear goddess of burlesque, the audience, the performers, Dynamo & everyone involved, THANK YOU for yesterday!
Unfortunately this is the first of the only 2 photos I took all evening. Jari & Jac as Bananarama Boys after their fabulous performances as Lola Vanilla & Sunshine Addison.
The second one doesn't do justice to the fun we had either! Here, the deceased queen of the firetassels, Bettie Blackheart looks like she is levitating.
But no worries, me & the infamous pipesmoking pineapple are plotting new stuff already! Expect to hear from us if not soon, then later!
But if you are looking for something do next week, why not pop in to the opening of my other half's exhibition "The Dance of Death"!
Or hop on the burlesque bus again! The fabulous ladies of Pieni Burleskiklubi are arranging a trip to Helsinki Burlesque Festival 2012 on Sat 18th February from Turku. You can find more information about the trip from Facebook event.
Or if none of the previous interest you, try learning Finnish by reading about me-me-me in the local newspaper. What ever you decide to do, have a fabulous week! Love!

Pipesmoking pineapple is here to stay!

And party! On Dec 3rd we are going to have an amazing lineup at the club "Pipesmoking Pineapple's Burlesque & Drag spectacular"!
On stage, straight from the glitter covered maitolaituri, the one and only Laila-Annikki Koivunen! Gorgeous bombshell Lola Vanilla! The sparkliest of them all, Sunshine Addison!
The hotter than hell couple from Helsinki, Bettie Blackheart & Frank Doggenstein! Sweet and tasty Honey Pomelo! Yours truly, Kiki Hawaiji
Plus a bonus set of surprises, which I will reveal on my birthday - the very same day when we can open the first window in our x-mas calenders!

And while You are waiting for the date, go and visit the wicked new place in town - Turku Tattoo Parlour! They are selling our tickets too!

The more the merrier

applies to traveling with friends! I just arrived home from a trip with fellow Hulapirates Lola Vanilla, Bent van der Bleu, Bettie Blackheart, Frank Doggenstein & Fiona Timantti.
Lola & some girrrrrrl power at the Joensuu Art Museum.
Our troupee was shaking, spinning and stirring the city of Joensuu as part of the Rokumentti - rock film festival, first at the local art museum and later in a fabulous club called Kerubi.
Low meets high art and vice versa.
I've got to admit it's been a while since I've performed in front of such a crazy, wild, thrilled audience.  Oh the enthusiasm and excitement of people going completely nuts about every single move and gesture!
Also I didn't mind at all knowing that Danko Jones had been in the same backstage the night before - damn he had a gig in another town!!! And on top of all that - my first snow came just when we were leaving the city! Life is good and it's time to wear my crazy winterboots!

Burlesque & Bible

is equal to a wonderful new(ish) magazine, Burlesque Bible, which finally arrived in the post today! In the latest issue, you can read a bit about my thoughts too.
Oh, the photo makes me long for winter! And snow, which I call nature's own glitter. At the moment it's dark like in a sack already in the afternoon, which results in experiments like pictures below.
Passion, 2011
My other half is having solo exhibition in December and we've been making video versions of my burlesque performances - a whole lot to do with death, dance, grotesque & camp.
Blossom, 2011
Luckily this weekend, I can escape the darkness with fellow Hulapirates & fabulous Fiona Timantti to the city of Joensuu! We are performing in bar Kerubi and Joensuu Art Museum as part of the Rokumentti  - rock documentary festival.
Here we are - Kiki & Bent in Tallinn having so much fun :
Don't you just love travelling with friends? I know I do!

It's partytime!

Just a quick note - there's parties all over country coming up!
Joensuu - are you ready? The wild and wicked Hulapirates Kabaree with DJ Fiona Timantti is about to take over the city in November!
And in December, we are going to finish year 2011 with a magnificent set of burlesque & drag art, carefully selected by the infamous Pipesmoking Pineapple! More information from

Who you gonna call? The Fuzzbusters!

Or in other words,  my tits have never looked so hot!  I had a pleasure to work with  Pickles, Igor, Mattarn, Teemu and Nicky from Mangoo a couple of months ago and here is finally the result!

Oct 21, 2011

Shame on me!

It's been far too long since the last Turku Burlesque party, so let's change it!
On December 3rd 2011 it's time for all the cute kittens, cool guys and everyone in between & beyond to come and enjoy the fine selection of drag & burlesque performers, carefully selected by infamous Pipesmoking Pineapple. Stay tuned for more information!

Lost in Space.

First of all - the finest book of the year is OUT - now go and get it! Burleska Bastarder aka the story of Hootchy Kootchy presents the fabulous years of wonderful club based in Stockholm. Incredible photos, jätte intressant esseys (på svenska) and an amazing graphic design. What else can you ask from a book!?
I had a chance to perform at Hootchy Kootchy's Russian Passion Club in 2010 together with the Hulapirates Kabaree. And when I finally got the book, I found out that amazingly talented artist Marcus Mårtenson had created a family tree for the book, with us in it too! Super!

Unfortunately, I've got to wait for more tranquil and less busy times for being a book worm and actually reading the book (good practice for my rusty swedish skills too!). So meanwhile, here is something else to share with you.  The Finnish Burlesque Gala finally came on the Oct 15th 2011 and what a fine night it was! And day too, since our Turku Burlesque -bus took off already in the afternoon from Turku.
Somewhere in the middle of nowhere, photo by ever so lovely Jaana Korhonen.
Our chauffeur Auno was quite a character but unfortunately after little Helsinki style "parking" disasters,  a couple of fallen traffic signs, almost crashed Audi and a few phone calls to police he didn't feel like joining the party! What a shame, I'm sure he would have loved it - like everyone else!
Here are lovely Tuta & Sammy, again immortalized by Jaana! The gorgeous couple are just about to open Turku Tattoo Parlour in Turku (obviously) - can't wait to get my whale finished with Tuta! Follow the link and you'll find details how to book appointment etc - I highly recommend both of them!
And here are me & Rudie Ruthless with the guys and girlies from Hell Monty. I wish I had a friend photo with Babu Gee - the newest MC phenomena in Finnish burlesque scene. But I guess You'll be hearing from her later :)

And like promised, I premiered my tribute to 60´s space travels and Star Trek which in this case meant balloons, misplaced wigs, camel toes and bras opening themselves like some malevolent creature from outer space would have been playing with them.
Kiki & Full Moon by Kerttu Malinen
Next weekend it's time for Halloween and oh boy, do I have some very special tricks & treats coming up! But before that, I'm going to lock myself into my studio and finish a little video footage for a certain little exhibition later this year. Until then, heippahei!!

K is for Kiki & the Kosmonauts and E is for Excitement!

There are butterflies flying not only in my stomach but all around! One week from now, it's time to return to the place where it all started back in 2008.
HBF 2008 by Laura Kansanen-Stavale. More photos from Flickr.
I can still feel the panic a few minutes before the doors opened - getting my makeup done, putting the false eyelashes on with shaking hands (probably for the 5th time in my life) and Bettie helping me with my hairdo. All done in the toilet, for god knows why.
Black Peider by Empa Rodriguez.
In the end, the night was a huge success, with the most beautiful people in the world, fabulous performers (Sugar Kane, Miss Anne Thropy, The Amazing Knicker Kittens Burlesque Revue, pick up by Olivia Rouge),  ever so amazing band the Skreppers as well as MC Black Peider - my favourite wrestler, singer/songwriter and comic artist.
The Amazing Knicker Kittens Burlesque Revue, photo: Laura Kansanen-Stavale.
If You feel like taking it down the memory lane, Helsinki Burlesque's Flickr has wonderful photo collections of every party and festival! But what I was going to say, was that the venue of HBF'´08 Restaurant Kaisaniemi will also be the venue of Finnish Burlesque gala - the first & biggest showcase of Finnish way of doing burlesque. Everybody, from the performers to the ones, who've celebrated with us from the beginning, is going to be there (and so should you, the tickets are selling f-a-s-t-!).
As I've already mentioned, I'm making a new act, inspired by cosmonauts, visit to Moscow, conquering new worlds and colorful parades.
I've been working with the costume and used colors, I've never used or even liked. But when combined with my favorite things such as pom-poms, fringe and Swarovski, it doesn't really matter.
Even soup de tassel was made.
In addition to the excitement of the new act, I'm super thrilled about the burlesque bus trip we are going to make from Turku to Helsinki. There is a group of 30+ local burlesque enthusiasts hopping on and I'm convinced it's going to be the ride of our lives!
Until then, have  a lovely weekend!

At the Fair & In the Bank

Perfomance Art Bank is a database that presents current Finnish performance and Live Art. It was published to the audience yesterday at the sales exhibition of contemporary art Art Fair Suomi.
I'm listed in the database as Suvi Aarnio and got invited to perform at the opening. I made a crazy version of my Blossom act involving a lot of playing with earth and ripping my thighs :) And as you can see I had loads of time to fool around in the "backstage".
Anyways, I recently noticed that Tigger! described himself as stripperformance artist. What a wonderful definition! Many of my acts are inspired by the past and yesteryear stars of burlesque but occasionally I've felt a bit strange to call some other acts as burlesque or to be more precise, art of tease.
In one hand, I think the world is already drowning in definitions, terms and classifications but on the other hand, it's wise to be aware of different styles / phenomena / etc. and especially, to be aware of what one herself is doing.

Sep 13, 2011

I've been looking for a new hobby, preferably something to do with dancing for a long time, but haven't found anything that I really would like. Then I remembered, my dear friend M has been going to flamenco classes and I decided to sign up myself.

I might be as stiff as these dancing dolls but who cares! The first lesson was yesterday and among many, many new and inspiring moves & rhythms and I think the most unforgettable lesson was that woman's boobs should point up and out like bull's horns. I'm going to remember that from now until the very last day of my life.

The photo above is from the book and exhibition Mil Besos: 1000 Kisses by Ruven Afanador - a fashion and portrait photographer based out of New York City. This woman represents so many things I want to be now and a bit older: strength, style, attitude and beauty.
Next weekend I'm going to an intensive course of Hawaiian hula.  I love the teacher Kirsi, who have danced in fabulous, Helsinki based Mana 'O Laka for many, many years. It's going to be fantastic too!
